Recomposed

30-Hour Code Game Jam (9th Edition)

Recomposed is my first roguelike shooter. You begin with a lone drum loop and add bass, melody, and harmony layers at each level to build the full soundtrack.
Created in just 30 hours for the 9th Code Game Jam at the University of Montpellier in January 2025, it features no fewer than 31 handcrafted rooms, plus start and end chambers.

My Design Roles

I led the design and integration of multiple systems:

  • Level Designer: Crafted and placed 31 rooms, mastering flow and AI navigation.
  • Systems/Combat Designer: Balanced shooting mechanics—damage, fire rate, and range—for player and enemies.
  • Production Coordinator: Led communication, organized playtests, and coordinated across time zones.

Challenges

Ensuring combat balance under tight time constraints; crafting room layouts that avoid AI pathfinding issues given simple straight-line enemy behavior; and rapidly learning Unity’s toolset with no prior experience.

Lessons Learned

I learned to trust my team of developers and artists, to develop an effective methodology for simple level creation, to communicate across time-zone constraints with a team member, and to rely on my colleagues when I lacked the necessary expertise.
